Contrast by FlorideCuts Contrast by FlorideCuts
Edward Elric from the Fullmetal Alchemist series.

I coloured this picture in two different art styles to compare them.
the left one was the first one I drew, I wanted to try another way to colour but I wasn't really satisfied with it so i drew it again in another version. I didn't like the left picture that much because I think I just can't cope with this art style... guss I'll stick with the other one instead.
(I still suck at backgrounds...)

what do you think, which version do you like best?

I personally think you should do some more work with the style on the left. I've tried doing a more 'painted' digital style before and I can never seem to get it right. I think you could really end up with something cool if you did it more often!

I'm sure I would need pretty much more practise for the left style - I agree with you in that part -  but I don't think I'll be using that style so soon again if even at all. I just wanted to try it out with this picture but I don't have the feeling that it suits me. anyway, thank you very much for your opinion! :)

On the left image I like how the style works on the automail, shirt and skin. For the right image, I really like the sharpness of the anime style on the pants, hair and face. I think it also works nicely on the automail. I think a multi-layered cell shading might be a nice mix between the two styles - also, hope you're not offended, but I think this tutorial ould be really useful since it shows a comparison of some different shading methods - fav.me/d45i1k3

thank you for telling me your opinion on the pictures! and thank you so much for the tip and the link, that is so helpful!! : ) shadings are one of my weaknesses... ^^'
I'm absolutely not offended, I'm very glad you gave me that link, it will surely help me to improve in shading, thank you! ^-^

Well, in my opinion the left one looks nicer :) BUt thatīs because I like if the different shades blur together like this. The right one is well drawn too but it looks too "harsh" for my liking.

I like the colouring on the left better, but the one on the right is definitely more accurate and concise with its shapes. The non-automail hand looks a bit fuzzy on the left. I think I like the right one a little bit more.

anything helps me, even if it's not that detailed. just a simple "I like it" can help me keeping my motivation for drawing and getting better. ^^
